The Suri alpaca is traditionally a slighter and more elegant animal than the Huacaya, covered in unique pencil like locks that hang straight down from the body. Its beautiful fleece has fabulous lustre, handle and feels like silk to the touch. Standing in the sunlight a Suri fleece glistens and shines like no other.
Suri alpaca are rare. They make up only 6% of the world's alpaca population and of that 6% less than 2% are coloured (not white). It's because of its superb fleece and rarity that coloured Suri has become some of the most sought after alpacas in the world.
In 2002 and with these animals home in New Zealand we began a strict breeding program within our existing premium stock that will not only see an increase in numbers but also a dramatic improvement in quality. We call these animals our Elite Collection. In addition to these fantastic Suri studs we also bought home a small herd of equally outstanding female Suri, these girls, bred with our new sires have produces ribbon winners and show winners all over the country.
In 2005 we made our largest investment to date with our Suri by selecting a group of 60 pure Peruvian Suri. This, to date is the single largest import of pure Peruvian Suri into New Zealand. These Suri were hand selected for their outstanding qualitlies in conformation and fleeces charactoristics. There is very strong Accoyo and Rural Alianza Suri bloodlines within the herd, these lines are the basis for all champion alpaca genetics around the world. Our herd has 10 elite quality full blooded pure Peruvian males. These males have gone onto produce both Australian Champions and New Zealand Champions. As an added bonus our new Accoyo stud went on to producing one of the highest ever recorded SRS Suri recordings in his progeny in Australia.
In 2006, one year after winning the National title in Huacaya we won 6 of the 8 Suri national titles as well Supreme Champion, and to top it off, we also took out the New Zealand Top Suri of the year award.
In 2008 we repeated the feat and won New Zealand Supreme Champion Suri for a second time. We also won many other show that year all with bloodlines for our 2005 import of elite genetics. These bloodlines are still here at Valley of Peace, they are still winning shows all around the country and they are available to you.
